23-hour per day of helmet wear is considered full-time helmet wearing*

Full Time Helmet wearing is crucial and important for the therapy to be effective. Helmet must not be off for more than 2 consecutive days as baby’s head continues to grow with/without helmet. In the event of unforeseen circumstances where helmet does not fit well after helmet is off for a prolonged period, please contact us to bring your appointment forward for review & helmet adjustment.

Caring for your baby’s skin

  • Always check your baby’s skin & head for pressure when helmet is off. Irritating or red spots on the cheeks and back of the neck are normal.
  • If you see red spots, gently press on them to see if they lighten:
    • If yes, continue helmet wearing
    • If no, leave helmet off for 30-60 minutes and check again. If spots fade, resume helmet wear.

However, if red spots do not fade after 2 hours, please contact us. In the event of skin breakdown, leave helmet off, take a photo and contact us.

Remember: if you notice redness, it is important to differentiate between rashes and pressure marks.

However, if red spots do not fade after 2 hours, please contact us.

Pressure marks tend to lighten and turn white when you press on the skin
Rashes remains red when you press on the skin
  1. Heat Rashes are common in our humid weather, especially so in the initial 2 weeks. You may apply thin layer of diaper cream over the rash and allow it to dry completely before putting the helmet back on.
  2. Your baby may perspire excessively (on his/her head) during the initial helmet wear period as their body temperature is adjusting to the helmet wear. Dress baby lightly. Keep the fans on for good air circulation in baby’s room. You may consider to keep the air conditioner on during the exceptionally hot days.
  3. Clean your baby’s head regularly. You can increase the frequency as you prefer. Do not introduce or implement drastic change of products used on your baby prior to helmet fitting. Make sure the helmet and baby’s head are completely dry before putting on helmet (after bath or whenever you take helmet off for cleaning).

Caring for your baby’s skin

  1. The foam discoloration is normal. Clean the helmet every day to remove sweat and skin cells that may discolor the foam and/or cause an unpleasant odor.
  2. DO NOT use non-alcoholic or moisturizing wipes to clean the helmet as they may leave a residue on the helmet and cause bacterial infection.
  3. Disinfect the helmet foam with rubbing alcohol or alcohol wipes.
  4. If odor persist, clean the helmet with mild baby shampoo/soap. Use a washcloth to scrub the foam firmly. Then, wipe out residue with a wet washcloth. Dry the helmet inside and outside with a hand towel and allow it to air dry or use the cold mode of the hair dryer.
  5. Do not submerge the helmet in water or placed under running water when cleaning.
  6. Make sure the helmet and baby’s head are completely dry before putting on the helmet.
  7. Rule of Thumb: The helmet must be cleaned well, every day, to prevent bacteria infection.

When can you remove the helmet?

  • During bath
  • When your baby is having fever (keep helmet off until fever is completely gone)
  • Physio therapy sessions (if applicable)
  • If any kind of surgery is performed
  • During any water-based activity (including swimming). Remember to wash your baby’s head with shampoo to remove any chlorine, sunscreen, etc, after swimming.
  • You may choose to have several “helmet off” times in a day, however, the accumulative “helmet off” time should not exceed 1hr a day.
